Victim grant doubled

4:40 pm on 3 February 2011

The Government has doubled a discretionary grant for victims of sexual violence from $250 to $500.

The grant was introduced in January last year and is funded by a $50 offender levy.

It aims to help victims cover one-off costs associated with offending, such as repairing locks, replacing items of clothing taken for forensic evidence or providing temporary accommodation.

Justice Minister Simon Power says it has become clear since the grant was introduced that it was too low.

He acknowledges it cannot take away the pain of victims' loss or injury, but says it helps reduce financial stress.
