Attacks on journalists condemned by NZ

1:40 pm on 6 February 2011

New Zealand has condemned attacks on journalists covering the protests in Egypt.

In a statement, Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said he is deeply concerned about reports journalists have been targeted by pro-government elements.

Mr McCully said the New Zealand Embassy in Egypt had to facilitate the release of New Zealand cameraman Olaf Wiig from military detention, after he was attacked and injured in Cairo on Wednesday.

Mr Wiig, who works for Fox News, is now in London.

But Mr McCully says his treatment is of considerable concern and the Government will be taking the matter up with the Egyptian authorities.
