12:55 pm on 9 February 2011

The Finance Minister has confirmed that this year's budget will be delivered on Thursday 19 May.

Bill English says Budget 2011 will focus on taking further measures to build New Zealand's national savings and reducing vulnerability to foreign debt.

He says the Government has already indicated it intends to borrow less in future and to get back to budget surplus sooner.

Mr English says this year's budget will reduce new operating spending to about $800-900 million a year, from the current allowance of $1.1 billion.

He says new spending on health and education will be prioritised.
