MPs are being urged to support a petition for more defibrillators in the community, so more cardiac arrest victims can be saved.
The New Zealand Rescucitation Council - which represents a range of doctor, nurse and first aid organisations - presented its sumission to Parliament's health select committee on Wednesday morning.
Chairman Richard Aickin says the devices should be deployed in high-risk settings like sports and entertainment stadiums, airports and other transport hubs, and nursing homes.
Dr Aickin says research shows automated external defibrillators which cost about $1000, can be used by completely untrained people.
