Popularity of charity payroll scheme grows

A scheme that allows workers to donate to charities directly from their pay has resulted in almost $1.5 million of donations in its first year.

Revenue Minister Peter Dunne says support for the payroll giving scheme is growing as more people learn about it.

He says in December alone more than 1400 workers donated nearly $200,000 to charities and were immediately given about $66,000 back in tax credits.

Mr Dunne says the scheme is a win-win for all involved.

The payroll giving scheme is available to all employers who electronically file their monthly schedules to Inland Revenue.
