Scrapping of rural affairs portfolio angers group

3:35 pm on 18 November 2008

The National Party's decision to scrap the rural affairs portfolio has outraged lobby group Rural Women New Zealand.

The group's national president, Margaret Chapman, says the minister of rural affairs ensured that the rural perspective was factored into policies such as health, education and transport.

Ms Chapman says she fears rural communities will be overlooked.

She says it is ironic that a National government, traditionally viewed as a supporter of provincial and rural New Zealand, has decided to discontinue the position.
