The chairperson of Te Papa has told MPs its greatest challenge is how the national museum can share its assets with the rest of New Zealand.
The musuem had its financial review before Parliament's Government Administration Select Committee in Wellington on Wednesday.
It said it is working on a 10-year plan that will cover its programmes and collections and how best to use the physical space it has.
However, Te Papa chair Sir Wira Gardiner says the vast assets the museum holds need to be better managed and shared with other centres.
Sir Wira says if that is not done, then Te Papa's role in sharing heritage - as a national museum should - would need to be questioned.
A first draft of the plan will be presented to the board in May and consultation will follow.
