Labour's ruling council is expected to re-open nominations for the Otaki electorate when it meets on Saturday in Wellington.
The party had selected Darren Hughes for the seat, which he represented for two terms until 2008.
But with his resignation from Parliament pending, Labour needs a new candidate.
The meeting will be the first chance the council has had to discuss the situation.
