Retailers 'co-operating' with alcohol pricing investigation

7:13 am on 13 April 2011

Justice Minister Simon Power says retailers have been generally co-operative so far with an investigation into a minimum pricing regime for alcohol.

The Government is looking at whether minimum prices could reduce the availability of cheap alcohol and help tackle binge drinking.

The Ministry of Justice has approached retailers asking for access to sales and price data, and those negotiations are ongoing.

Mr Power says some retailers have agreed in principle to allow access, but he has not ruled out the possibility of a law change that would allow the Government to require the collection of price and sales data from retailers and producers.

The minister says he is reserving the right to bring that power to the forefront of dicussions if he needs to.
