No evidence to support need for SAS inquiry - PM

5:55 am on 26 April 2011

Prime Minister John Key says he has seen no evidence to support the need for an inquiry into a claim that SAS soldiers have handed over prisoners to Afghanistan authorities, who could torture them.

The Green Party wants an independent inquiry following a report by Metro magazine suggesting the SAS played a key role in arresting and transferring prisoners last year to Afghan authorities.

Under international conventions, New Zealand cannot transfer prisoners to countries where they might be subject to torture.

Mr Key says he has seen nothing to indicate New Zealand troops have done anything other than what is expected of them, and have acted in line with international protocols.
