The Maori Language Commission has told a Parliamentary select committee that more money and stronger powers are needed to promote the language.

Chairperson Erima Henare told the Maori Affairs Committee that the legislation governing the Maori language is weaker than that for sign language.

Committee members also heard that the commission does not have enough money to fulfill its role of monitoring the effectiveness of Government agencies in promoting the language.
