Independent MP Hone Harawira has resigned from Parliament, forcing a by-election in his Te Tai Tokerau electorate.

The Speaker's Office confirmed on Wednesday that Mr Harawira has resigned his seat, effective from the close of business on 20 May.

Mr Harawira became an independent after quitting the Maori Party to form the Mana Party.

The Electoral Commission has a week to decide on a date for the by-election.

Mr Harawira says he is looking forward to the challenge and is comfortable with his decision to put the future of the electorate in the hands of the people.

The Maori Party and Labour will also contest the seat.
