Cigarette price controls supported

Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia says she would support controls to prevent tobacco companies dropping the price of cigarettes if plain packaging is introduced.

The Australian government is finalising legislation on removing branding from tobacco products, but British American Tobacco says that would lead to an increase in contraband cigarettes and it having to slash prices to compete.

The Government says it is watching what happens in Australia with interest.

Mrs Turia says if plain packaging is introduced and tobacco companies drop their prices, she would support price controls.
