Maori Party by-election shortlist

12:06 pm on 22 May 2011

The Maori Party has announced a shortlist of three names from which it will select a candidate to contest a by-election in Te Tai Tokerau.

Former party member Hone Harawira resigned from Parliament on Friday after launching his new Mana Party.

The Maori Party will choose from either: Ngati Hine leader Waihoroi Shortland, who played the role of 'Weirdo' in the movie Boy, Whangarei co-chair Solomon Tipene or lawyer Mere Mangu.

Ms Mangu previously contested the seat as an independent candidate, polling second in the 2002 general election and third in 2005.

The successful candidate will run against Mr Harawira, who won the electorate with just over 12,000 votes in the 2008 general election, twice as many as Labour candidate Kelvin Davis who will again contest the seat.

Maori Party co vice-president Ken Mair says the successful candidate will be announced on Wednesday.
