Harawira, Labour neck and neck, poll shows

10:00 pm on 13 June 2011

A new poll shows a virtual tie between independent MP Hone Harawira and Labour's Kelvin Davis less than two weeks to go before the by-election in Te Tai Tokerau.

The by-election on 25 June was sparked by Mr Harawira's resignation from Parliament to seek a fresh mandate under the new Mana Party banner.

The poll for Maori Television's Native Affairs programme found 41% support for Mr Harawira, a former member of the Maori Party - just one percentage point ahead of Mr Davis on 40%.

Maori Party candidate Solomon Tipene was a third at 15%.

The poll of 508 eligible voters in Te Tai Tokerau was conducted by Baseline Consultancy and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5%.
