Turia seeks seat on welfare reform committee

9:24 pm on 16 June 2011

Disability Issues Minister Tariana Turia has told MPs she has asked for a seat on the committee that will look at welfare reform.

Only National Party ministers have been appointed to the group so far.

Mrs Turia appeared before Parliament's social services committee on Wednesday and was questioned about the direction of the welfare reforms and how they will affect disabled people.

Mrs Turia said there was no clarity about what the Government wanted to do but she had asked to be part of the ministerial group.

She said she would be extremely concerned if there was not consideration of the effects of welfare reform on people on disability benefits.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett said through a spokesperson she is delighted Mrs Turia wants to be a part of the group and looks forward to her input.
