Mr Key says New Zealand is very keen to sign a trade deal.
He says New Zealand is looking to significantly increase its exports, and India needs a reliable and safe food supply.
"I've learned that you should never take things for granted and there's a lot of things to be done.
"But it was a very clear signal by the Indian Prime Minister that he wanted me to come and he's made this a state visit.
"From a New Zealand perspective, India's a very important market but increasingly from India's viewpoint, New Zealand is very important as well."
Mr Key's visit is at the level of a state visit so the trip to the Taj Mahal was cleared for the tour.
He described the famous building as majestic and elegant with a fascinating history.
