New head of Treasury appointed

A new head of the Treasury has been appointed to replace John Whitehead.

Gabriel Makhlouf will be Treasury's chief executive and secretary and has been appointed for five years.

He has been the deputy chief executive for a year and acting secretary since Mr Whitehead left at the beginning of June.

Before that, Mr Makhlouf was a senior manager in the public service in the United Kingdom.

Mr Makhlouf says this is a time of significant change and opportunity for New Zealand.

He says the Treasury has a firm focus on growing the economy, getting public finances back in order and working with the public sector to deliver better services for less.
