Biosecurity bill to give regional councils more scope

6:03 am on 7 July 2011

Biosecurity Minister David Carter says the Biosecurity Amendment Bill will change the way regional councils approach the control of pests and disease in their area.

A select committee recently reported back to Parliament after considering submissions on the bill.

Mr Carter says changes to the current Biosecurity Act will improve New Zealand's pest management system and give regional councils greater scope.

He says that once the new Biosecurity Act comes into force, it will substantially improve New Zealand's biosecurity management system, which he says is arguably already the most robust in the world.
