Parliament's Law And Order Select Committee will not be extending a bill that would make an attack on a police or prison officer an aggravating factor in sentencing.
It considered amending the Sentencing (Aggravating Factors) Amendment Bill to include ambulance officers and other public sector workers at risk of assault.
The select committee says while it does not want to diminish the seriousness of assaults on other occupational groups, the bill was introduced specifically in response to a significant increase in attacks on police and prison officers.
Figures show assaults against police officers increased by nearly a third between 2005 and 2009.
Assaults on Corrections officers more than doubled, although serious attacks have dropped.
The bill will go back before Parliament for its second reading.
