Flying visit by Swan for trans-Tasman talks

8:16 am on 15 July 2011

Australian Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan has made a flying visit to New Zealand for talks with Finance Minister Bill English aimed at boosting trans-Tasman relations.

They discussed Australia's new carbon tax, the recent natural disasters in Queensland and Canterbury, and the progress on efforts to harmonise the economies of New Zealand and Australia.

The visit coincided with the unveiling of Labour's capital gains tax policy, a tax Australia has had for more than 20 years.

Mr Swan said he was not about to step into New Zealand political debates, but he told Morning Report the tax had worked well in Australia.
