Paul Goldsmith, a political biographer and former Auckland city councillor, has won the National Party candidacy for Epsom in a close vote.

The seat is currently held by former ACT party leader Rodney Hide who was rolled by Don Brash earlier this year.

Mr Goldsmith has written biographies on Mr Brash and John Banks. The latter will stand in Epsom against him for the ACT Party.

The vote went to three ballots, where it was a run off between Mr Goldsmith and Aaron Bhatnager, John Banks' former campaign manager.
