Talks underway over criminal justice bill

9:01 am on 11 August 2011

The Government has begun talks with the Maori and ACT parties as it tries to secure enough votes to pass major reforms of the criminal justice system.

The Criminal Procedure (Reform and Modernisation) Bill aims to speed up the criminal justice system and would result in fewer jury trials by reserving them for crimes carrying a sentence of more than three years.

The legislation survived its first vote and has been through a select committee.

But Justice Minister Simon Power says at present only National is committed to supporting the bill.

ACT and the Maori Party are concerned about changes to the right to silence and the move to have defence lawyers make known in advance broadly what areas they will argue in court.
