GST petition delivered to Parliament

6:41 pm on 16 August 2011

A petition calling for GST to be taken off food has been presented to MPs at Parliament

The Tax Justice campaign says it contains 40,000 signatures.

The group is backed by a number of unions and the Alliance Party.

Wellington co-ordinator Grant Brookes says they want GST removed from food and a tax put on financial speculation instead. He says it would result in a fairer tax system.

MPs from the Labour, Green, Maori and Mana parties were outside Parliament to receive the petition.

Labour's Mangere MP, Su'a William Sio, formally accepted the petition, and congratulated the group on collecting 40-thousand signatures.

It was one of two petitions delivered to Parliament on Tuesday.

Another petition asking the Government to take stronger action to protect children and young people from sexual exploitation, was delivered to the Justice Minister Simon Power.

It was signed by 74,000 people and was organised by the Body Shop and the ECPAT advocacy group.
