New Zealand to ratify child protection protocol

8:00 pm on 16 August 2011

The minister made the announcement at Parliament on Tuesday when he was given a petition signed by 74,000 people calling for stronger action to protect young people from sexual exploitation.

Mr Power says the petition is timely, with legislation passed last week that will allow New Zealand to ratify the document.

He says ratification will mean the Government will need to report on a regular basis to the UN on how it is complying with the protocol.
