The Labour Party says the planned upgrade of a Defence Force facility in Auckland is a knee-jerk reaction following a serious security breach.
Defence Minister Wayne Mapp on Thursday announced plans to redevelop Kauri Point, including upgraded security systems.
A burglar broke into the site at the beginning of the month, and got past security patrols and alarms.
Labour's spokesperson on Defence, Iain Lees-Galloway, says the changes are welcome but long overdue.
He says the changes were suggested to the minister from the day he took office and the fact that it's taken two years shows that it has not been a priority, and the only reason action has been taken now is due to the theft.
Mr Lees-Galloway says a report also identified issues with ammunition storage at Ohakea and the minister should look to upgrade that site as well.
