Maori Party names candidate to stand against Harawira

11:01 am on 21 August 2011

Broadcaster Waihoroi Shortland will contest the Te Tai Tokerau electorate for the Maori Party at the general election.

The seat is held by Mana Party leader Hone Harawira, who left the Maori Party earlier this year and forced a by-election in June to gain a mandate for his new party.

Mr Shortland says 6000 people in Northland did not vote in the by-election which Mr Harawira won with a greatly reduced majority, and he wants to bring those votes home for his party.
