Clark had nothing to do with getting UN job - Carter

8:21 am on 1 September 2011

Independent MP Chris Carter says former prime minister Helen Clark had nothing to do with a job he's obtained with the United Nations in Afghanistan.

Mr Carter was a Cabinet minister in the previous Labour government.

He was expelled from the party caucus last year for publicly criticising leader Phil Goff.

Mr Carter says he's quitting politics for a position based in Kabul in charge of a UN anti-corruption team.

Miss Clark heads the UN Development Programme, but Mr Carter says she had nothing to do with his application.

Three sitting Labour MPs were his referees, whom he's declined to name.

Last year Mr Carter publicly apologised for his use of his ministerial credit card while travelling overseas.

Soon after, he was expelled from the caucus for criticising Mr Goff.

Mr Carter told Morning Report that all of his career and experience was on the table for the UN.

He said his friendship with Miss Clark had nothing to do with his appointment.
