Goff takes Govt to task over earthquake 'promises'

Labour leader Phil Goff says Christchurch red-zone residents who made improvements to their houses had their expectations for payouts unfairly raised by the Government.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee has said home improvements made since the 2007 rating valuation might be taken into consideration when the Government buy offers are put together.

However, only renovations that increased the overall floor area are being considered and at the weekend Mr Brownlee said he had got it wrong.

Mr Goff says people were led to believe no one would be worse off, but that is not the case.

He says before the Government makes promises it should be sure it can keep them so that people's hopes are not dashed.
