Parliament has paid tribute to a New Zealand solider shot in Afghanistan.

Corporal Doug Grant, 41, a member of the Special Air Service team was shot trying to rescue people from a British Council building during a Taliban attack in Kabul on 19 August.

Twelve people, excluding the attackers, died during six hours of fierce fighting.

A full military funeral was held for Corporal Grant at Linton Army Camp near Palmerston North on 29 August.

Deputy Prime Minister Bill English told Parliament on Tuesday that Corporal Grant was a man who exemplified the Defence Force's values of courage, commitment, comradeship and integrity.

"Today, the members of this House honour Doug's sacrifice. Our thoughts remain with his family and friends. Corporal Grant paid the ultimate price for his service to his country. He is a hero and we will never forget him."

Corporal Grant served in the Defence Force for 21 years. He had served twice in East Timor, once in the former Yugoslavia and was on his second deployment to Afghanistan.

He is survived by his wife, Tina Grant, and their two young children.
