Voluntary student membership bill close to passing

10:39 pm on 8 September 2011

A bill that seeks to make student association membership voluntary is likely to become law before the election.

The legislation, in the name of ACT MP Heather Roy, has been stuck in its committee stages for months while the Labour Party blocked its progress.

But Labour chief whip Rick Barker says the party no longer has the ability to stop the bill.

The party has been filibustering on the Royal Society Bill that was on the order paper before the voluntary student membership bill.

But Mr Barker says the National and ACT parties used their numbers to report progress on that bill, which was a game changer.

The student association bill is now set down for its third and final reading on the next member's day, 28 September.
