NZ more dependent on US, say Greens

The Green Party has accused successive New Zealand governments of becoming more dependent on the United States since the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

The party's foreign affairs spokesperson, Keith Locke, says the so-called war on terror has been used to tie New Zealand more closely to the US.

Mr Locke says freedoms in New Zealand country have also become more restricted.

He says there has been an increase in police and intelligence surveillance since 2001 but no terrorists have been found in New Zealand.

Ceremonies have taken place at Ground Zero in New York, at the Pentagon in Virginia and Shanksville in Pennsylvania in memory of the victims, a decade after the terrorist attacks.
