Alcohol Reform Bill passes second reading

8:27 pm on 13 September 2011

National MP Chester Borrows says the alcohol reforms going through Parliament will help change people's behaviour.

The Alcohol Reform Bill has passed its second reading with the support of all parties in Parliament except ACT.

It will not come back before the House for its final stages until after the election.

One of the most significant changes the bill will introduce is a split purchase age of 18 for licenced premises such as pubs and bars, and 20 for off-licence liquor outlets.

Mr Borrows chaired the Justice and Electoral Select Committee, which heard submissions on the bill.

He told Parliament New Zealand does have a problem with a binge drinking culture and while the legislation won't deal with that, it will assist a change in behaviour.
