Greens want Govt to regulate log imports

9:48 pm on 13 September 2011

The Green Party is calling on the Government to stop the importation of illegally logged timber products into New Zealand.

The party hosted a forum at Parliament on Tuesday afternoon discussing New Zealand's role in rainforest protection issues.

Green MP Catherine Delahunty says the trade in illegal timber is destroying rainforests, and endangering species and the homes of 60 million indigenous people.

She says Australia and the United States regulated to stop the importation, and it is important that the New Zealand government does so as well.

Ms Delahunty says the voluntary codes of practice that are in place are not strong enough.
