Brash in favour of decriminalising marijuana

5:43 am on 26 September 2011

ACT leader Don Brash favours decriminalisation of marijuana because prohibition is costly and is not working.

Dr Brash told Q + A on Television New Zealand on Sunday he has never been a marijuana user or been tempted to use it, but both the Law Commission and a global commission on drug policies say criminalisation has not worked.

He said ACT believes in protecting the rights of citizens from criminals, but criminalising marijuana puts power in the hands of gangs.

Dr Brash said he is not advocating the use of marijuana.
