Terms of Maori children's welfare inquiry announced

6:46 pm on 28 September 2011

The Government has released the terms of reference for an inquiry into the status and wellbeing of Maori children.

The committee is inquiring into the historical and current health, education, and welfare profiles of Maori children as well as how government services can better serve their needs.

It will also focus on the significance of whanau for strengthening Maori children and what policy or legislation might address any concerns found in the inquiry.

The inquiry was launched by the Maori Affairs select committee in June and is now asking for public submissions.

The Greens co-leader, Metiria Turei, says the inquiry needs to hear from as many people as possible to build up a picture of how Maori children are faring.
