Independent regulator for legal profession ruled out

3:01 pm on 7 October 2011

The Government has ruled out appointing an independent body to regulate the legal profession.

Justice Minister Simon Power says he is satisfied with steps taken by the Law Society to address concerns about the quality of legal aid providers.

In 2009, a report into legal aid found serious problems with the quality of legal services and criticised the Law Society for its over-reliance on complaints as indicator of poor-performing lawyers.

Mr Power says the Law Society has since increased its legal experience and professional competency requirements for lawyers practising on their own, and improved its complaints and disciplinary processes.
