The Green Party has welcomed the State Services Commissioner's backing for its complaint the Treasury has been engaged in an excessive and unacceptable culture of receiving corporate gifts.

The Commissioner says New Zealanders expect higher standards from an impartial public service.

The Treasury was found to have accepted hundreds of inappropriate gifts and hospitality, over a year, from banks and other companies.

It says it will strengthen its official guidelines on accepting corporate hospitality.

Greens co-leader Russel Norman says the Treasury made a serious error in judgement and will need to be closely reviewed to ensure it changes its ways.
