The Labour Party has pledged to help New Zealanders return to their sporting traditions.

The party released its sport and recreation policy ahead of the 26 November election on Wednesday.

Senior MP Trevor Mallard says Labour will continue to upgrade the infrastructure of huts and tracks, and promote the development of new walking and cycling trails on former railways land.

Mr Mallard says Labour will also set up an investigation into school sport participation, including the feasibility of reintroducing midweek early finishing nationwide in order to facilitate midweek sport.
