Minister considering online school comparison site

9:29 pm on 1 February 2012

The Education Minister says she is considering an online option to allow parents to compare schools.

Hekia Parata says the country invests billions of dollars in the education sector and New Zealanders are entitled to know if they're getting value for money.

She says Australia has a system where comparisons of schools - sometimes referred to as league tables - are listed on a website.

Ms Parata says the Australian system only compares schools that are statistically similar and is suggesting that would be the approach adopted in New Zealand.

Ms Parata says parents place a lot of trust in school principals and teachers and that trust should be returned by giving them accurate information.
