Government not planning body scanners at airports

The Government has no plans to follow Australia's lead and introduce full body scanners at international airports.

The scanners, which check for items under a person's clothing, will be introduced at Australian airports in July.

The government in Canberra says measures have been taken to protect peoples' privacy and if passengers refuse the scan, they will not be allowed to fly.

New Zealand's transport minister Gerry Brownlee says the Government will monitor the introduction of the scans in Australia but at the moment the arrangements in place at New Zealand airports are satisfactory.
