Report on foreign charter fishing vessels received

3:34 pm on 24 February 2012

The Government has received the report on a ministerial inquiry into the use of foreign charter fishing vessels fishing in New Zealand waters.

The use of these vessels has been under scrutiny following accusations of labour abuse including poor wages and physical, mental and sexual abuse on some ships.

An inquiry into the $1.5 billion export fishing industry was launched in July last year.

This week, fresh accusations of labour abuse were made involving vessels chartered by fishing companies United Fisheries and Sanford.

Primary Industries Minister David Carter and Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson will consider the inquiry panel's report and recommendations before announcing any decisions on the future of foreign charter vessels.
