Minister wants legal aid legislation deferred

7:05 pm on 27 February 2012

Justice Minister Judith Collins has asked a select committee to defer its consideration of legislation to overhaul the legal aid system.

The Law Society called on Parliament to defer the legislation earlier in February until the outcome of a review of the Family Court.

Ms Collins says many of the changes in the bill relate to family matters and it makes more sense to align and take into account decisions arising from a review of the Family Court.

Recommendations from the review are expected to go to the Cabinet for consideration later in the year.

Ms Collins expects the Legal Assistance (Sustainability) Amendment Bill will now be considered about that time.
