Tauranga Hospital has shifted its emergency department to another part of the hospital following after a fire on Sunday afternoon.
Three wards, including the emergency department, had to be evacuated for nearly an hour from about 3pm.
A hospital spokesperson Diana Marriot says the fire appears to have been in the basement.
She says it cut power to several parts of the hospital including the emergency department.
She says the department has been smoke damaged and will need to be thoroughly cleaned.
