Appeal over status of future port expansion

9:39 am on 5 March 2012

An appeal will be made to Auckland Council this week seeking to remove any reference to expanding the Port of Auckland from its 30-year plan.

The council has added new wording to the plan to try to defuse an outcry that followed a campaign aimed at blocking further reclamation in the harbour.

Ports of Auckland has long intended to seek to extend the container terminal more than 200 metres further into the harbour.

The 30-year development blueprint covers the port's importance to the city, but does not lock in anything specific.

Auckland Council has written a final version which highlights the criteria that any expansion proposal will have to satisfy.

But a new residents group will on Tuesday tell the council there has been insufficient public debate.
