Wellington regional council proposes 5.7% rates rise

10:55 pm on 6 March 2012

The Wellington Regional Council has proposed a rates rise of 5.7%

The increase is to pay for works such as the continued upgrade of the region's rail network and a proposed $39 million electronic ticketing system for public transport to be set up by 2016.

The council is also setting aside $10 million to earthquake-strengthen its central city headquarters over the next two years.

The rise represents an extra $25 a year for the average ratepayer, the council says.

Chairperson Fran Wilde says the plan will be considered by councillors on Thursday and will be available for public consultation from late March.
