Children injured after fishing near rail tracks

KiwiRail is urging people to stay away from the country's rail tracks after two Christchurch children were injured.

A four-year-old girl suffered serious injuries when she was hit by a train on Sunday afternoon while fishing with a group of children off a rail bridge at Grimseys reserve near the suburb of Belfast.

The children were unsupervised. The girl's sister, who is 11, was hurt when she jumped from the bridge.

Both children are expected to make a full recovery and KiwiRail says they have been very lucky.

Police say the train driver saw the children on the tracks and sounded warnings and activated his emergency braking.

KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn says he is confident the bridge had the necessary fences and warning signs in place.

Mr Quinn says the bigger issue is that walking on the rail corridor is dangerous and illegal and people need to stay away.

Police say they are not investigating the matter further.
