Liquid waste company fined $35,000 for pollution

A liquid waste removal company has been fined $35,000 in the Tauranga District Court for three breaches of the Resource Management Act.

The breaches relate to contaminated liquid overflowing from Petes Takeaways Ltd's sewage treatment plant in June last year.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council's pollution prevention manage, Nick Zaman, says waste overflowed from treatment ponds and reached the Waimapu stream south of Tauranga.

Mr Zaman says site inspections showed higher levels of faecal coliform contamination in the waste going into the stream.

He says the offences occurred after periods of rain, but the weather is no excuse for polluting public waterways.
