7:18 pm on 21 March 2012

Prime Minister John Key was met Wednesday night by hundreds of protests as he arrived at the opening of the Deniston Coal Mining offices in central Wellington.

Mr Key was rushed into the building by security staff, without stopping to speak to the protesters.

Forest and Bird, Green Party MPs, WWS and Greenpeace are among groups representing the protesters.

They promise to fight the Government and any proposals to mine the mainly conservation land on the South Island's West Coast.

Green MP Catherine Delahunty told the group the protesters represent people throughout the country who oppose the mining.
