The navy says it plans to keep using a piece of land in the Auckland suburb of Devonport which residents are worried about the future of.
The Government intends to sell the 3.2 hectare block of Defence Force property to Ngati Whatua o Orakei under a Treaty of Waitangi settlement.
[image:4912:half:right]Hundreds of residents attended a public meeting on Saturday to voice their anger at the sale of the Narrow Neck land.
Many oppose the deal because it allows Ngati Whatua to develop the land commercially after the navy finishes using it.
However, the terms of settlement specify that the navy will lease the land for a minimum of 15 years and a maximum of 150 years.
A spokesperson for the navy says it has no plans to vacate the land in the short to medium future.
The site is used as an officer training school and also has workshops where trades are taught.
One man at Saturday's meeting, Alan Graham, complained that the community has not been consulted about the sale.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finalyson says concerned residents can make a submission to the Maori Affairs Select Committee, which is handling the settlement.
